ABOUT NOCTURNAL
Nocturnal is the third a cappella group formed at Rice University in Houston, Texas. Since our founding in November 2010, we have transformed from a small vocal ensemble into an established and respected a cappella group that values having fun and producing a distinct, high quality sound wherever we go. At our core, we are a group of friends who share a passion for singing and love sharing that passion with others.
Currently, Nocturnal holds eight official on-campus performances, either on our own or with other Rice organizations. This includes Families Weekend, our Fall Benefit, our Winter Study Break Concert, Rice Acappellooza, Archi Arts, our After Dark performance in Pub, Owl Days, and our Senior Send-Off. We are invited to several open mics every year, such as Rice PRIDE, Diversity Council, and R2. Nocturnal loves joining fellow student groups for one-of-a-kind events, including improv troupe Spontaneous Combustion and dance company Rice Dance Theatre. We also perform off campus at events throughout Houston, such as the River Oaks Country Club and Rice Village, and we travel to the TAMU Acappellooza in the spring.
Nocturnal strives to create a supportive, inclusive environment where we can discuss and act on current issues. We use our voices for good causes, including our benefit concerts for Houston service organizations. Our events help keep the influence of music alive at Rice and in the Houston community. We love bringing together people passionate about the arts.
OUR MUSIC
Nocturnal selects songs to arrange and perform based on member interest, resulting in a diverse repertoire spanning various contemporary genres. A team of current members creates exciting new arrangements for the group, which range from indie pop to alternative rock, to r&b, and more. If there’s a song you want to hear us sing, send us your suggestions!
We learn and perform about 25 songs every year, with 10-12 in the fall and 12-15 in the spring. We take pride in singing a different collection of songs for every performance on and off campus. Some of our favorite songs come from our After Dark concert, which includes a scandalous setlist, and our contemporary Acappellooza set.
We will release our first album in the coming year in collaboration with the Rice Music Collective, featuring members and songs from 2020, 2021, and 2022 seasons.
